Box Hill Choral Society was formed as a result of a public meeting, held in October 1946 to form a committee to establish a choral society and brass band, and to improve the existing orchestra.

A “semi-public” concert of madrigals and part-songs was presented at Box Hill Town Hall in July or August 1947. This was followed by a formal concert on 22 October 1947 (8p.m., Box Hill Town Hall). Leonard Fullard conducted, with Meredith Moon at piano, Constance Ziebell on violin and Morris Williams (baritone) soloist.

Concerts have been presented regularly ever since these early efforts, with the wide range of repertoire we now expect - early efforts ranged from the part-songs and madrigals to Hiawatha's Wedding Feast (September 1948), Purcell's Te Deum (August 1949) and the first of a long series of Christmas concerts in Box Hill Gardens (18th December, 1949 at 3 p.m.).

A complete history of the Chorale is being prepared by our Members Representative, Bob Glass, but unfortunately there are still significant gaps in the records. Perhaps you or a family member sang in the choir in the past or attended concerts? If you have access to any historical details, memorabilia, photos or copies of old programmes, please send an email

Bob would love to talk to anyone with memories of the Chorale in earlier times and to copy any old documents or photographs for the archives. Send an email to him (link above) and we will arrange for him to get in touch.
