The repertoire of Box Hill Chorale is diverse, although biased somewhat towards the well-recognised oratorios and larger sacred works. Our recent concerts have included Haydn's The Creation, Mozart's Requiem, Magnificat and Stabat Mater by Pergolesi; works by Buxtehude, Schubert and Faure; Songs from the Shows with excerpts from My Fair Lady, Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables; Brittens A Ceremony of Carols; a range of traditional and modern Christmas carols; and modern arrangements of sacred music, including the Australian premiere of John Rutters Cantus. In 2008, we performed the world premier of a commissioned work by Australian composer, Nicholas Buc called "Journey of the Wise Men".
Another world premiere we have performed is Nicholas Buc's new work "Mary MacKillop Mass". This was performed at Portland Civic Centre, repeated on Sunday afternoon in Mount Gambier, SA. The work was also presented as the full "Cantata Mass" at the old Cathedral Central Hall, Fitzroy - just across the road from Mary MacKillop's birthplace; then as part of the full liturgy at St Scholastica's Catholic Church, Bennettswood. The Mass was written to honour Blessed Mary MacKillop. Box Hill Chorale members travelled to Portland to join other singers from the Music Glenelg Festival Singers and the Australian Catholic University Choir, as well as excellent soloists, for the weekend. The Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Orchestra provided the instrumental accompaniment for the Mass and some other items in the programme.
With Melbourne University Choral Society, this Mass was performed again to celebrate the canonisation of St Mary of the Cross, in BMW Edge, December 2010.
In April 2011, the Chorale presented another BMW Edge concert, including John Rutter's "Requiem" and other English choral music.
In August 2011, joining with several other choirs to form a 400 voice ensemble, Box Hill Chorale took part in a very powerful performance of Beethoven's Choral Symphony with soloists and the MSO at the Melbourne Town Hall.
In early 2012, we travelled again to Portland to take part in the Portland Maritime Festival, and starred with the Tall Ships and other choirs from Melbourne, South Western Vistoria and South Australia.
In Mid April, we will be singing with Camberwell Chorale in a compined performance of Dvorak's beautiful Requiem Mass. Check our "Coming Up" page on this site for more detail
